Glam was popular in NY, Yes I am old but I saw Kiss on stage shirt like the New York Dolls. They were too hulking to look glam. Gene Simmons was into comics and superheroes, Ace was obsessed with space travel… after enough gigs and being conscious of glam they started experimenting with makeup. They evolved into alter-egos. They wanted to have an entertaining stage performance and the personas were the foundation of it. The makeup led to them wanting to mask their identities and play a cat and mouse game with the media. From 1974–1983 there were no photos of the band without makeup… or without a napkin over their faces, etc. Kiss is very close to the costumes worn by some of these acts. Most of these artists also wore overt makeup.
