We have adopted two children. The first was 8 months old when we brought her home. With her, it was like one week we were a childless couple and two weeks later, we had a baby. She fit in easily and was such an easy, easy kid. The dogs loved her, too. She did not cry much and she mostly slept through the night. She was quietly fascinated by everything and she laughed a lot. We thought that’s what 8 month old babies were like. Then we came home with baby #2 who was 12 months old. To start off, she was difficult and fussy while we were still in Moscow. She wouldn’t drink the formula we had and had explosive diarrhea.
It was awful. We ended up making a mush rice mixture because she had to have something in her poor little underweight tummy. She cried through the nights unless I was holding her. She didn’t want my husband to hold her. So he slept through the nights and I held her all night long. We were there for 8 days post-adoption. I slept while she napped, which wasn’t for more than an hour at a time. To make matters worse, I had my first hot flashes while on that trip. So I was holding a hot baby in the middle of summer in an un-air-conditioned 7th floor apartment in Moscow. With almost no sleep.
