It is no more than a kind of mental static and fulfills no real purpose. You have stated that you do not want to get lost in thoughts. You can practice being mindful of your work, to every small detail of it. Whatever you are doing, however repetitive it may be, be aware of everything you are doing. If you can do it, you will certainly not get lost in thoughts. But, this is indeed a tough task.
Since, you have claimed that you often get lost in thoughts and considering that you have not been fired, I presume that repetitive nature of your work allows you to be mentally absent from the work for some time without affecting work. Find out something that can be helpful in your career, that can prepare you for higher responsibilities, that can be helpful to your employer in cutting costs or enhancing efficiency.
