While there actually are focusing optics that can guide and focus x-rays into narrow spots, for producing an x-ray image they’re entirely unnecessary. (If you have questions, feel free to ask! You can do that just fine with a pinhole. The goal is to translate angles outside the detector to positions on the detector, and a pinhole does just that. It doesn’t work as well as a lens, but that’s just because it doesn’t take in as much incoming light. Our oldest cameras were all pinhole cameras before they started making lenses for them. As George and Gary mentioned, phosphors and films have a response to x-rays. Heck, a lot of things have a response to x-rays. We make x-ray detectors out of silicon that can not only sense the presence of x-rays, but detect the energy of the x-rays to form a “color” image. It’s one of our more powerful elemental analysis techniques.

All of our x-ray imaging equipment requires blasting the target to be imaged with x-rays, and pick everything up on the other side and the image is really more like a shadow of a translucent object. But there are other techniques too, such as Backscatter X-ray imaging, in which the target is still lit up with x-rays, but instead of getting an image of their x-ray shadow, we pick up the x-rays that are scattered off the target. We still get to see through stuff, but it’s not quite as “see through stuff” as the transmission/shadow-casting imaging. It is used in airports to look through your clothes when you put your hands up, and recently American Science and Engineering built a handheld backscatter imager for the US Army.
