Probably. Alcohol is a depressant. It slows down all kinds of things in the brain making it more relaxed. It also thins the blood which means your heart doesn’t have to work so hard, thus making you more relaxed. Does it HAVE to be a glass of wine? Nope. You can take an aspirin and a melatonin with some grape juice and get the same results. (assuming you’re not allergic to aspirin) If you’ve been doing it for a long time you could also be having a Pavlovian response to the ritual. If you do a certain thing as the same time every day and then go to sleep. That act will make you sleepy. If you *want* to stop drinking wine you can train your body out of it. One glass of wine doesn’t hurt most people, so if it’s not hurting you, don’t stop. However addiction is dangerous so if alcohol is getting in the way of other things, then stop and retrain.
I get hungry when I read a book or any physical object. Why? because for years on years I read the cereal box while I ate. I read all the packages on my lunch. No matter how many times I read the nutrition facts for milk, I read them again. When older I would just bring my book to the table (If I wasn’t eating with anyone else). Now I can’t read anything (by myself) without getting hungry. Reading a computer screen doesn’t count. But that’s a whole ‘nother issue. Have I stopped reading? nope. Do I ignore the hunger when I read? Usually. But hey if it’s snack time anyway, I’m grabbing that box of Cheezits.
