I didn’t know how to react. My mom shoved me on the other side of her, so I just stared at this man as hard as I could until he finally looked at my face, rather than my body. When he did look up, he had the audacity to look uncomfortable. Like, I’m sorry? You checking out a child with to regard for your wife right next to you is okay, but the child making eye contact with you isn’t? Maybe he was (rightfully) embarrassed to get caught – I don’t know the thoughts of creepy old men. I have never felt as gross and objectified as I did that day. When I told my computers teacher about it (she likes ‘gossipy’ stories), her response was “Well, you do look a lot older than you are.”
So I was working for a diodes company, I was their lead on weekend night shift in the diffusion area, I also worked in different areas while I waited for my diodes to cook, and was certified to work in multiple areas. I ended up getting injured (not on the job) and my doctors made me miss too much work because I couldnt stand the 12 hours needed to work the area. They said if they moved me to a different area where I could stand sometimes and sit other times id be fully released. So I asked about being moved to another department. I was qualified for all of the different departments on the floor. They said no. I asked if they could put me on call then or part-time. They said no. So my doctors kept keeping me off work. One day every other week I missed with a doctor note.
So fast forward a few months and they tell me that they’re going to have to let me go. Of course I get pissed vecause they all knew. But HR had a new guy working and he wasn’t informed of what was happening. So I got attacked at work the week before I was fired by a male employee. He happened to be one of the shift managers favorites and he had to fire him. And he didnt like that at all because I was the big big bosses favorite. So anyway the shift manager that had to fire his favorite employee starts talking to HR about me missing work but neglects to tell him that I had a doctors note for every minute missed. So I get fired.
The following weekend night shift that I would have been working had they not fired me, I get a phone call. Its my work calling me asking if I would tell them how to run this 5 million dollar machine that sprays gold onto the diodes. I of course laugh and tell them I’m sorry I cant tell you how to run it because your not certified to run it. Then told them to go ask the engineer that also knew how to run it. Thats when I’m told that that engineer quit as soon as he found out that they fired me. At this point I’m laughing so hard I’m crying. And said you seriously lost the only two people in this state that knows how to run the brand new machine you paid 5 million dollars for? Oh how I dont feel bad for you. Have a great life guys and get some brains.
Well they never were able to find anyone who knew how to run it. So it just sat there looking pretty filled with gold to spray on diodes that were never going to get used. And to rub salt into that wound they tried to fight me on unemployment. But someone stole my file from HR and deleted all my work history out of the computers. After we went to court I called the head HR guy who had just lost his case and let him know to start looking for another job because they were going to fire him for losing that case. He didnt believe me 1 month later he was fired the shift manager who started this crap was fired and my shift manager was demoted.
THAT DOESN’T MATTER. I’m 99% sure I don’t look 60. It was gross, rude, and disrespectful. I felt embarrassed afterwards, like it was somehow my fault, but I wasn’t even wearing so much as a crop top. Even if I was, it still would have been gross, rude, and disrespectful. Please, people of both genders (I’ve seen much older women be creepy to much younger men. Looking at you, AGT.) Don’t be a creep. It’s literally that simple. It’s different if it’s someone close to your age, dating pool and all that, but please try to be respectful to those around you.
