Farmers have to pay for those cows’ food. If you can’t sell the cow at a profit, then you can’t keep buying food for it. Your choices are to slaughter them or watch them starve to death, which may actually be illegal (animal cruelty and all). You can’t exactly release your cows into the wild when you can’t afford them anymore, or send them to a shelter.
