They’ve also changed their sound enough over the years that their “best” song of one style is entirely different from their “best” in another. “Just Can’t Get Enough” is, for example, a prime example of the sort of bouncy 1980’s synthpop that launched them, and it’s one of the best examples of that style from that era – but it doesn’t compare to the complexity of “World In My Eyes.”Stripped” has some remarkable things going on it too. a pretty simple vocal-and-pad to a more Depeche Mode yes I am old but I saw on stage shirt complicated-but-cohesive mix of soaring choirs, clangorous samples, and other dissonant noises. “Never Let Me Down” is sort of the apex of the “stadium synthpop” sound that dM pioneered. It’s big and spacious, with a propulsive rhythm but doesn’t fall into the trap of being just a “dance track.” It bridges the gap between big stadium rock and dancy electronic pop music rather well. Those are probably my top three, in terms of production and songwriting. There are a LOT of “almost as good” tracks from that period between roughly 1986 and 2000ish, but those three just edge them out in my mind.
