I worked for a rather great home improvement company for 6 years. This happened at year 3. I ran a carpenter crew and we framed the additions right down to the finish work. The boss who was very fair paid real well. He shared the wealth. On a whim we see he bought a mason dump truck, trailer and the beautiful new small Kubota backhoe and loader. Over time and trial no one could operate it. I laughed to the boss and said “David , my father and brother are in the operating engineers local 825. It runs in my blood. So he asked me to try and take out a brick porch. I had it out and cleaned and backfilled in an hour and a half.
He was impressed and added that to my work. This meant I couldn’t oversee my Carpenters and things went wrong. I was the master carpenter and then wanted me to run the masonry crew to save money on the subcontractors. I cannot do both boss. I’m one guy. Then he learned I could lay concrete, block, brick, any masonry duty. Now from easier work to heavy work. And he gave me two guys who were laborers to help. Meaning I had to teach them too. This interrupted my peacefulness. I asked or rather TOLD him to do this I need a substantial raise. I got more than I asked for and all the over time I wanted. So Saturdays were always keeping the machine workable to. Now I was a deisel Mechanic too. The boss and I made it work because he started asking me instead of telling me.
