Words hurt. Words damage. We must at least acknowledge that. Just because some of us grow some thick skin, doesn’t mean it’s OK to spill your hatred. It doesn’t mean those who still feel the hurt have themselves to blame for being too weak. Quotes like these place the responsibility on the victims, that somehow the victims are responsible for their own suffering, and the pain would stop if only they could rise above it. Quotes like these treat bullies, misogynists, homophobes, and bigots as if they’re some unstoppable natural disasters, and the only thing minorities can do is to change ourselves, be stronger, be tougher, get over it. The underlying message is: the world will never change, people will always be racists and sexists and homophobes. There’s no point trying to change the society for the better because this is how it is and how it always will be … you better get used to it.
