Our manager arranged one Saturday to have a large picnic get-together for all our employees to attend so that our families and tenants could meet one another and become acquainted. I really looked forward to this event because it provided the perfect opportunity to show ‘Larry’ that I was not the racist he thought I was. I arrived early to help set up tables and things before our families arrived, and I made a point of approaching “Larry’ before the event began to get him to once again affirm his idea that I thought I was a better person than he. Then I told him that it was really going to disappoint and surprise my wife to hear that news, and he was puzzled and had no idea what I was talking about.
When my wife arrived, I made a big deal over her and gave her a big kiss and started introducing her to everyone, including ‘Larry.’ The look on his face, when he met my beautiful little black sugar-pie, was worth a million bucks! The following week, our supervisor called me into his office, where he and ‘Larry’ were waiting for me. ‘Larry’ had arranged for our supervisor to mediate a truce between himself and me. It gave me great pleasure to forgive ‘Larry’ when he apologized for accusing me of racism, and after that our friendship and mutual respect was fully restored.
